Terence “T.J.” Hutmacher was born and raised in Pearl River to parents Pam and Terry Hutmacher. Fortunately for Nanuet athletics, the Hutmacher home had a Pearl River address that fell within the borders of the Nanuet school district. T.J. joins his sisters Kelly Mahoney (1988 Basketball Team) and Danielle Carbone (1993 Softball Team) in the Nanuet High School Sports Hall of Fame. T.J. enjoyed playing all sports as a youth athlete and was a member of the Orangetown Patri- ots Pop Warner football team, Nanuet Little League, as well as the St. Aedan’s CYO basketball team.

T.J.’s love of sports continued through middle school where he even tested his athleticism on the modified wrestling team. Modified sports is also where he was introduced to what was arguably his calling as an athlete. He began playing Lacrosse in 8th grade where he made an immediate impact scoring 21 Goals and assisting on 10 more.

Once reaching the HS as a freshman in 1993, T.J.’s athleticism began to flourish thanks to his incredible work ethic. Competing as a tailback and cornerback for the JV Football team in the fall and as a point guard on the freshman basketball team prepared him for his debut on the varsity Lacrosse team in the spring of 1994. Watching him excel in his first year playing the sport as an 8th grader, Coach Ralph Rogo recognized his talent and had no doubt he could make an immediate impact for the Varsity team that season. He was right, in his debut season on an 8-6 team T.J. contributed with 13 points, 5 goals and 8 assists.

Scoring 8 touchdowns and leading the JV football team in rushing is how T.J. started his Sophomore year. He followed up his football season by averaging 10 points per game on the JV Basketball team. But once again in the spring season is where he truly excelled, getting himself recognized outside the confines of Nanuet. In his second season on the varsity Lax team, T.J. led the team in scoring with 29 goals and 10 Assists. These statistics resulted in a 2nd Team All County selection, based on T.J. being the only underclassman in Rockland Coun- ties top 10 scorers for Lacrosse that season. T.J. credits his off season work which included a Lacrosse camp at West Point during the previous summer for his success and being selected as the “Most Improved Player” of his Lacrosse team that season.

Moving into his 11th grade campaign, T.J. led all running backs with 580 yards and 6 touchdowns while also playing a vital role in the defensive secondary. Although the team did not make it deep into the postseason they still finished with a winning season at 5-4. As a varsity Basketball player in the winter season of 95-96, T.J. stepped into a more defensive role on a team that finished 13-6. Even though T.J. loved playing all the sports he was introduced to, he always found time during the summer, fall, and winter to work on his LAX game. He would be seen playing “wall ball” or shooting on an empty net in the bitter cold when most other HS athletes were warm indoors somewhere else. That work would end up paying off as the boys lacrosse team of 1996 went 16-1 behind T.J.’s 49 goals and 29 assists. This total of 78 points led all Rockland County scorers in that season and was 2nd among all of Section 1’s scorers. This was even more impressive since he had made himself known the previous season and was drawing competitors best defenders all season, as well as being double and triple teamed at times. The undefeated regular season unfortunately ended with a loss in the first round of the playoffs to John Jay Cross River 9-8 in which he was held to 3 goals and 1 assist after sustaining a broken jaw

(and possibly a concussion) in brutal body check in the second quarter. This Junior lacrosse season garnered T.J. many awards with him being named All League, All County, All Section, and ultimately being recognized as the Rockland Journal News most valuable athlete for his sport.

There really was no offseason for Hutmacher as he followed up his scholastic Lacrosse season by making the Hudson Valley Empire State Games team along with fellow Golden Knight Brian Dowd. His team went on to win a Bronze Medal at the Games that Summer.

The fall of 1996 began T.J.’s Senior year as Golden Knight. The football season fell short of expectations by finishing 4-4. This undoubtedly had something to do with team Captain Hutmacher missing 3 games do to a knee Injury. Despite missing 3 of the 8 games played still led the team in rushing yardage with 465 yards, finishing his football career as a 1000+ yard rusher (1044). His skills on the football field as both a halfback and a safety were not overlooked, even in an injury shortened season. T.J. was recognized as an All-League and All-County player.

The knee injury from football, unfortunately forced him to miss the basketball season in order to properly rehab for his culminating season of Lacrosse. The team Captain followed up his stellar Junior season with an- other All-League, All-County, and All-Section caliber performance. Although the team did not have the same success that it had the previous year, it was not due to a lack of production from T.J. He came into the season a marked offensive threat, yet managed to finish the season with 40 goals and 21 assists. When asked about coaching T.J. Hutmacher -a career 191 point scorer (123 goals, 68 assists) Coach Ralph Rogo had this to say:

“T.J. was a tremendously committed player who was truly dedicated to Nanuet athletics. On the lacrosse field I liked his flexibility to play both attack and midfield. You could always count on T.J. to win ground balls and control the game.”

T.J. went on to play lacrosse for Division I Sacred Heart University where he continued his Lacrosse success. He was named team captain for 3 years (the only player to do so in team history), and climbed as high as 11th in the country in Division 1 Lacrosse scoring with 27 goals and 25 assists his Senior Season. During his Junior year he was named Sacred Hearts “Male Athlete of the Year” despite missing 6 games due to his second collegiate ACL injury.

“T.J. was the consummate student-athlete. He demanded excellence from himself and those around him. He fought through injuries and became an all-conference player in one of the best leagues in the country. He was the ultimate teammate and a leader of men. He set a standard and made sure others followed him. T.J. is one of best leaders that I have had the privilege of coaching. T.J. currently lives in Pearl River (Nanuet School District) with his wife Courtenay and their three children, Terence-9, Abigail-7, and Luke-6. All three are involved in youth sports: football, baseball, soccer, basketball and lacrosse and are coached by their parents. Hutmacher currently holds the rank of Sergeant with the Or- angetown Police department and serves as a member of the Rockland County Police S.W.A.T. Unit.
